At the start of this project, I was not quite sure what direction I wanted to take but quickly found with the random AI generations that I made, that the idea of religion could be an interesting topic to glitch with. I find that the unknown is a very stimulating topic for me, especially when talking about afterlife, heaven, hell, etc. From the beginning, I had the AI produce images of things depicting hell, heaven and what god would look like because I think it’s interesting for a computer with an immense amount of data to tell me what it thinks of an afterlife. To produce my AI images, I predominantly used Night Café because I liked how it was able to make images based off the cyberpunk genre and made the idea even more futuristic than I had even thought of at the beginning of the project. After learning how to do each of the different glitches, I used the photos from the AI and wanted to produce an even more confusing and complex idea of the future. In some of the pictures, I would use multiple processes like for example in Neon Signs in Church, I used both Audacity and Textedit to enhance the glitch effect. I wanted my project to have a cohesive look to it, to make sure that the viewer would be able to depict what I was trying to portray. I think that the bright colors of the cyberpunk effect really enhance the futuristic aspect in an afterlife, as many people apart of a religion usually just think of heaven’s gates or a fiery hell. Overall, I think the combination between futurism and religion plays really well together to produce a more Syfy version of an afterlife.
